The move: MongoDB stock plunged as much as 27% on Monday to a nearly two-month low.
The why: Meta poached Chirantan “CJ” Desai, the now-former president and CEO of MongoDB, to lead a new enterprise-AI platform. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called it “the next major pillar of our business.”
This new division is Meta’s attempt to sell the AI tools and infrastructure that comprise its commercial tech stack to corporate clients.
“CJ is an experienced enterprise leader with a track record of building full-stack software and delivering results in AI, infrastructure, business applications, and security,” Zuckerberg wrote in an X post. “He has an extensive industry network that we look forward to partnering with.”
Meta has been at the forefront of a consumer-AI wave centered around its newly released personal agent, Muse. Its successful rollout has sparked an AI trade reshuffle.
What it means: Desai hadn’t been with MongoDB for long; his entire tenure was roughly eleven months. But before arriving there, he spent many years helping grow several prominent enterprise platforms, including almost eight years with ServiceNow and one year at Cloudflare.
By hiring him, Meta has sent a clear message: they are going all in on enterprise software and they are willing to poach the best talent to do it.
MongoDB stock’s plunge on news of his departure indicates that investors are pricing in Meta’s new threat to enterprise platforms. These software producers, already rocked earlier this year by the AI-driven ‘SaaSpocalyse,’ now face a new threat from one of big tech’s leaders, at a time when Wall Street’s confidence in Meta has just been largely restored by Muse’s splashy debut.
Desai noted in a LinkedIn post that in his view, the next wave of tech will see both large and small businesses reinventing entire workflows using AI, and that Meta will likely be at the forefront of this movement.

“Meta has a rare advantage in this transition: advanced AI models, large-scale infrastructure, and agents paired with an ecosystem that already helps millions of advertisers and hundreds of millions of businesses grow and succeed,” he stated. “Bringing those strengths together creates the opportunity to build an entirely new enterprise platform.”
