CLEMSON — As teased earlier this week, President Donald Trump will visit the Upstate to rally for U.S. Sen. Darline Graham — and in her backyard.
The Republican National Committee announced that the president will appear next week at Clemson University on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
The exact location hasn’t been disclosed.
While favored, Graham is in what polls indicate is a tighter-than-typical race against Democrat Annie Andrews for a full term to the seat held for three decades by her brother, the late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham. The siblings grew up in Central, a short ways from Clemson.
After Graham’s appointment to the seat after her brother’s unexpected death last July, Trump moved quickly to endorse her for the job full time.
This week, as speculation swirled over a potential Trump visit to the Upstate, Graham told reporters in Greenville that she would “be proud to have him here in this community.”
It won’t be the first time Trump has swept into South Carolina to help Graham overcome an electoral challenge. When she faced a heated runoff in the Republican primary against U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, Trump held a rally in Myrtle Beach to turn out voters.
In that primary, Norman won a hefty share of the vote in the Upstate, and there has been a concerted push among his supporters to write his name in when casting ballots Nov. 3.
