Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of US President Donald Trump, privately opposed the war with Iran from the outset and voiced his concerns to his father, according to a report by The Atlantic.
Two people who spoke directly with Trump Jr about the conflict told the publication that he believed the United States should stay out of another war in the Middle East. However, he has not publicly criticised his father’s decision to launch military action against Iran alongside Israel.
A person close to Trump Jr told The Atlantic: “Don has kept his views on the subject private, as he would never publicly break with his dad on an issue like this, but I can’t imagine anyone who knows Don would be surprised by his personal views on the subject.”
Long-Standing Opposition To Foreign Wars
Trump Jr’s reported position reflects his long-standing scepticism of foreign military intervention. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he backed his father’s promise to keep the US out of another Middle East conflict.
“Remember when they said Trump would get us into a full-blown war with Iran?” he wrote on X in April 2024, as Iran launched missiles and drones towards Israel.

“Times like these should make us all realize how lucky we were to have Trump, his strength and his resolve,” he added.
Trump Jr was also close to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who opposed the war with Iran before his death. His reported stance highlights divisions within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement over the president’s military campaign and its implications for his promise to prioritise domestic interests.
Doubts Within Trump’s Camp
Trump Jr’s reported opposition comes amid wider concerns within the administration over the military campaign. Vice President JD Vance was among senior figures said to have privately expressed doubts while the administration debated support for Israel’s military action.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also reportedly questioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s initial proposal, including whether an air campaign could achieve regime change in Iran.
One person who spoke to The Atlantic about Trump Jr’s opposition called him as firmly aligned with the movement’s core principles, saying: “Don Jr. is the most MAGA of them all.”
The reported differences come as the war faces growing public scrutiny, with concerns mounting over its duration and the risks of the United States becoming embroiled in another prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
