A high-level delegation will press for deeper nuclear deterrence cooperation and coordinated responses to security threats, setting the stage for new defense commitments.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Gdańsk on Monday, April 20, to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The main topic of discussion will be strengthening defense cooperation between the countries, with a focus on nuclear deterrence and joint actions in response to threats to Europe’s security.

The plans were announced to journalists during a briefing at the Élysée Palace.

Joining Macron in Gdańsk are the ministers of defense and foreign affairs, as well as other members of the French government.

«This summit aligns with the Franco-Polish Treaty of Friendship and Enhanced Cooperation, signed on May 9, 2025 in Nancy, which contains a provision on defense and mutual assistance that directly concerns France’s closest allies»

In March, Macron proposed bringing eight European countries, including Poland, into the “advanced French nuclear deterrence” program to broaden the scope of collaboration in this area.

In response, Polish Prime Minister Tusk expressed a desire for conventional participation of allied forces in France’s nuclear activities, including participation in strike exercises similar to those in which the United Kingdom participates. Conventional support, as stated, covers three areas – early warning, air defense, and long-range strikes.

“One of the goals of the summit will be to continue this discussion,” the president’s administration said.

In addition, the leaders will discuss the development of the European industrial and defense base and joint steps in the use of military communications satellites.

Relations between France and Poland are based on the intergovernmental Treaty of Friendship and Enhanced Cooperation, signed on May 9, 2025 in Nancy, which defines the framework for defense cooperation and mutual assistance.

It is expected that the meeting will summarize future steps to strengthen transatlantic and European defense partnerships and deepen coordination on the regional security council.
