According to a report from Fox Business, Elon Musk recently suggested that federal payments to citizens, which he termed a universal high income, represent the optimal solution for addressing unemployment resulting from artificial intelligence. Musk made the statement on his social media platform, where it remained prominently displayed. He argued that such a program would not lead to inflation, positing that AI and robotics would generate goods and services at a rate surpassing any increase in the money supply.

Several economists expressed disagreement with the proposal. One former economic advisor to India’s finance ministry stated that Musk was incorrect, asserting that while AI causes disruption, it also generates new employment over time. This individual further contended that the technology would not produce enough to prevent inflation and that implementing a universal high income would lead to government bankruptcy.

The co-founder of an AI company also expressed skepticism, stating the underlying calculations for such an income program are flawed. He suggested that if everyone received a high income, it would increase competition for finite resources like housing and education.

Conversely, some view the concept more favorably. A former Democratic presidential candidate, known for advocating a universal basic income, offered measured support. He indicated that AI would ultimately finance a universal income system and called for its rapid implementation.
