A visit meant to highlight early childhood care turned unexpectedly light-hearted when former US President Barack Obama and New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani found themselves singing nursery rhymes with preschoolers in the Bronx.

The two leaders met at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx, where the focus was on early childhood engagement. But what stood out from the visit was not policy talk, it was the cheerful interaction with children.

Obama and Mamdani were seen leading a group singalong, including the classic “Wheels on the Bus.” In return, the children introduced them to “Soda Pop,” a song from the K-pop film Demon Hunters, creating a lively exchange that blended generations and cultures.

Adding humour to the moment, Obama joked, “You made the mayor feel really old,” drawing laughter from the room.

Obama: Does everybody think that Mamdani was the best singer?

Children: Yeah!

Mamdani: You’re just being nice to me.

Child: Mamdani is the best in the world.

Mamdani later shared glimpses of the visit on Instagram, highlighting both the playful and serious aspects of the interaction. “Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx,” he wrote. He added, “In between singing wheels on the bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City — one where New York’s cutest have the strongest start possible.”

The visit comes at a politically significant time. While Obama and Mamdani spoke by phone earlier, the former president has not publicly endorsed Mamdani during the New York City mayoral race.

Even so, the Bronx visit offered a softer, more human moment in the midst of political developments, one where policy discussions briefly gave way to nursery rhymes, laughter, and a reminder of the importance of early childhood care.
