Apple has stated that Tim Cook will conclude his tenure as chief executive on September 1. The company’s board of directors unanimously approved the change following a succession planning process.

John Ternus, currently the senior vice president of hardware engineering, is set to become the next CEO. Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman. The leadership handoff is described as gradual, with Ternus working alongside Cook before the formal assumption of duties.

Ternus first joined Apple’s product design team in 2001. He advanced to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and joined the executive team in his current senior role in 2021. His responsibilities have included overseeing hardware engineering for major product lines. Upon becoming CEO, he will also join the company’s board of directors, marking him as the eighth individual to hold the chief executive position at Apple.

Concurrently, Johny Srouji will move into a new, expanded chief hardware officer role, taking on hardware engineering duties. Arthur Levinson, the non-executive chairman for the past fifteen years, will become lead independent director on the same date.

Cook became CEO in 2011 after joining Apple in 1998. During his leadership, the company’s market capitalization grew to reach four trillion dollars. Annual revenue reportedly climbed to over four hundred sixteen billion dollars in the most recent fiscal year. The company expanded into new product categories and grew its services segment to an annual revenue exceeding one hundred billion dollars.

Ternus will lead a company confronting industry pressure in the area of artificial intelligence. The company has faced scrutiny over the perceived pace of its generative AI development. Recent changes in the AI division leadership included hiring an executive with prior experience at other major technology firms. Apple has committed to releasing a redesigned Siri utilizing external AI technology and is also pursuing an on-device AI strategy through a framework that provides tools to developers.
