While gentle parenting has received its fair share of mixed opinions online, Lara Trump weighed in on the parenting style with a blunt assessment.
On Tuesday, April 21, Lara — President Donald Trump‘s daughter-in-law and the wife of Eric Trump — appeared on The Katie Miller Podcast to talk with the host about what it’s like to be a part of the Trump family, and the conversation turned to her thoughts on parenting styles.
The 43-year-old Fox News Host told Katie, the 34-year-old wife of White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, her candid thoughts on gentle parenting, and it’s safe to say she doesn’t do it.

“I hate gentle parenting. I am not a gentle parent at all,” Lara said. “Total bulls—. Not a fan.”
The concept of gentle parenting has made its waves on social media and parenting blogs, garnering widespread popularity. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “The goal of gentle parenting is to raise confident, independent and happy children through empathy, respect and understanding, and setting healthy boundaries. This parenting style focuses largely on age-appropriate development.”
However, the parenting technique has faced criticism from some parents, as some say that social media depicts gentle parenting in a way that can shame parents and cause stress.
“But…I’m really curious,” she continued. “Come back to me in 20 years and tell me how that kid turns out. I’m- I’m really worried for you.” Miller laughed in her seat at Lara’s thoughts on the parenting style.

“Like, my son the other night was desperate to leave the lights in the hallway on and was like hysterical about turning the lights off,” Lara said. “And Eric and I were like, ‘We’re turning the lights off.’”
Continuing, she said, “And he kind of whined about it for a while thinking someone would feel sorry for him. No one felt sorry for him, and guess what? The past two weeks since we’ve established this rule that we’re turning off the lights in the hall, he hasn’t even said anything about it.”
“Cause you know why? We’re in charge, and we made that decision, and we followed through on it,” she concluded. “That’s all.”
Lara and Eric share two children: a son, Eric Luke Trump, born in September 2017, and a daughter, Carolina Dorothy Trump, born in August 2019.
“And you can’t put empty threats out there for kids who hate it,” she said. “It doesn’t work.” Miller chimed in, saying, “They need firm boundaries,” and Lara agreed, “1,000%.”
Social media users criticized Lara Trump’s stance on gentle parenting
Viewers of the podcast shared their reactions to Lara’s stance on gentle parenting on X, with one critic writing, “The poor kid was probably scared of the dark. Instead of comforting him, like a normal nurturing mother, Lara said F— ‘em! I need my alone time to drink my wine. 20 years from now those kids are going to be the ones who hate their parents.”
Another user wrote, “I feel sorry for both y’all children.” One user commented, “You can do gentle parenting while also having firm boundaries.”
However, others agreed with Lara’s stance, with one user writing, “This is right on point….kids need guidance and high expectations to thrive.” Another commented, “Firm parenting isn’t cruelty, it’s preparation for the real world.Well said.”
