We’ve reached a point where people from just a few decades ago would be amazed by today’s level of wealth and how easy many jobs are, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
On “The Rundown AI” podcast in October, Altman said a farmer 50 years ago would look at today’s jobs and struggle to believe they count as work, given how little physical labor they involve. No matter how important we think our jobs are, people from the past would likely see many of today’s roles as something humans created simply to give life meaning and fill time, he said.
“They very likely would look at what you do or I do and say, that’s not real work,” he told host Rowan Cheung. “If you’re like farming, you’re doing something people really need. You’re making them food, like you’re keeping people alive. This is real work. All you people of the future, life just got too easy for you.”

‘This Game You’re Playing’
But Altman thinks the very definition of a hard day’s work is also about to be rewritten as AI reshapes labor. The shift could be so profound that future jobs may seem too easy to a generation used to today’s grind, he said.
“It’s very possible that if we could see those jobs of the future, we would be like, okay, well, you know, maybe our jobs were not as real as a farmer’s job, but it’s a lot more real than this game you’re playing to entertain yourself,” Altman said.
As an example of how big the shift could be, Altman said some companies are already talking about “zero-person” billion-dollar firms, where AI agents do all the work. He thinks that kind of company is not far off — possibly just years away.

‘Short-Term Worries’
So if AI ends up doing most of the work, what does that mean for human society? Altman believes our relationship with work is subjective and heading for a fundamental shift. Humans will still have plenty to do and find meaning in life, but the path there may not be smooth. There could be short-term pain, especially as AI replaces many knowledge workers and disrupts jobs faster than people can adapt.
“From our reference perspective, it would maybe look more like less like work than what we do now,” Altman said. “I have some short-term worries as we go through this transition. But man, I’m so willing to bet on human drives. And, I think we’ll find plenty of things to do.”

Building Wealth Across More Than Just the Market
Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. That’s why many investors look to diversify with platforms that provide access to real estate, fixed-income opportunities, professional financial guidance, precious metals, and even self-directed retirement accounts. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn’t tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry.
