Fresh tensions have emerged over Cyprus following new statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who warned that Ankara is prepared to act decisively to protect Turkish Cypriots.
Speaking after a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman at the historic Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Erdoğan reiterated Turkey’s long-standing position on security and sovereignty issues concerning the island.
Warning over foreign troop presence
According to Turkish media reports, Erdoğan cautioned against the possibility of foreign military forces remaining permanently in Cyprus under the pretext of regional tensions, particularly those linked to Iran.
He stressed that any temporary deployments should not evolve into a lasting military presence, signalling Ankara’s concern over shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“All necessary measures”
In a strongly worded message, Erdoğan declared that Turkey is ready to take “all necessary measures” to defend the rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots.
He emphasized that Ankara would not tolerate any developments that could undermine their position, reinforcing Turkey’s role as a guarantor power on the island.
High-level meeting
The talks also addressed broader regional developments and bilateral relations, with senior Turkish officials in attendance, including intelligence and communications leadership.
The latest remarks are expected to add to ongoing diplomatic sensitivities surrounding Cyprus, a region that remains strategically significant amid wider Middle East tensions.
