OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Thousands of shareholders will arrive in Omaha this weekend for the annual Berkshire Hathaway meeting, but ongoing construction may complicate their visit.
The meeting brings an average of 40,000 people to Omaha each year. Visit Omaha said they expect roughly the same turnout this year in spite of the changes to the company — and the city.
Visitors seek Buffett landmarks
With Warren Buffett retired, he will not be at this year’s meeting. But Visit Omaha said that will not stop people from trying to achieve the “Buffett experience.”
“They want to do the Buffett tour, their own makeshift Buffett tour. They want to go scope out his house, they want to peer inside your building apparently, they want to go eat his favorite meal at Gorat’s, they want to have his favorite ice cream, they want to go shop at Borsheim’s and Nebraska Furniture Mart, they know what they are coming here to do,” said Jasmyn Goodwin, executive director of Visit Omaha.
Farnam Street often fills with tourists while shareholders are in town, but this year, the favorite stops are packed with construction materials — stretching from Blackstone to downtown. And the airport is also in the middle of major construction as well.
Hotels near capacity
Last year, Visit Omaha said 80% of hotels were booked for the week before the event. That number jumped to 95% booked across the entire Omaha metro.
Visit Omaha created maps to help visitors navigate the downtown area.
“We did prepare for this for Berkshire Hathaway and we created maps to help you navigate the downtown area; with also a couple of tips for what streets to maybe detour and use alternate routes. We created tear-away maps and distributed them to every hotel in the city,” Goodwin said.
The maps will be provided to every hotel guest:
