Since the 2024 election, the Democrat party has been in free fall mode. Their approval numbers are plummeting, and they have no real platform outside of hating President Trump. Literally, that is all the party platform has become. On top of that, the party seems to be getting crazier and moving even further Left than it already had been.
Progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Pamila Jayapal dragging the party to the depth of destruction yet, somehow, they have snared a voter base large enough for them to hold their seats. They are the next era of Democrats, as low of a bar as that sets. As all three of them yell into television cameras more and more, it is causing the face of the Democrat party Chuck Schumer to lose more control over the party.
The “old school Democrat” Schumer has done what he can to try and relate to his party’s progressive surge. He has tried to reason with them and give them what they want, and in the end, even Chuck Schumer is not radical enough for them. Which says a lot about how far gone the party truly is now.
Republican strategist Matt Locke says the party has passed Schumer by at this point.
“Schumer is in a tough spot…he has the younger, socialist folks coming in behind him,” he says.
There is somewhat of a rebellion happening within the party. The hardline progressives want their all-in agenda or nothing at all. You give them everything or they will cleave you from the heard and watch you die in the wilderness. That is what Schumer is facing, metaphorically of course. Somehow, being far left is not good enough.
That is a problem the party has created not just within itself though, but in its over base. They have concocted a mess of progressive, woke agenda liberals who want free handouts, government programs and life to be one big free utopia. It is quite the monster they have created for themselves.
“Everyone is trying to out-left everyone, going further and further left,” says Locke. “Now, they have created this voting bloc that wants more liberal, socialistic policies…and I think Schumer finds his way on the outs eventually, I do not think he sticks around long.”
That could be via retirement or by being primaries, but Schumer’s days in Washington at least have a clock. Especially as the party begins turning against him and demanding the world.
Therein lies the problem though with that sect of liberal and Schumer is losing total control. They could have all of that and it will never be enough. It is essentially cannibalization of the party.
“Democrats have created a monster…feeding the animal, and it is turning the animal into something that is going to eventually bite them because they cannot give them enough free stuff,” Locke says.
The party will blame Trump, Republicans, white men, a whole host of things as to why their party is on the brink of failure. But in reality, which they never like to face, it is the culmination of a decade of self-inflicted wounds.
Schumer has made this bed, now he has to sleep in it. At least until he leaves office.
