Melania Trump has maintained a firmly protective stance concerning her son, Barron Trump, striving to shield him from unwarranted public attention.

Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, and the first lady will likely to spend the day with President Donald Trump and her 20-year-old son Barron.

As her only son, Melania has shared her worries over media focus on Barron, who maintains a predominantly private existence. Since his father’s second presidential term commenced, Barron has appeared publicly just twice, most recently at February’s State of the Union address.

During the winter holidays, Barron’s privacy was compromised when the president, Melania, and their son visited Mar-a-Lago, the exclusive club situated in Palm Beach, Florida.

On December 26, 2025, Mar-a-Lago guests allegedly violated Barron’s privacy by capturing photos and videos of him during family moments. PEOPLE reported that sources revealed an “unspoken rule” dictates how Barron should be approached at such gatherings.

One attendee at the Mar-a-Lago holiday celebrations observed, “It’s very understood that guests don’t bother Barron or anyone around him.”

Atlanta Black Star reported that sources revealed Melania was “furious” after the privacy violation involving her son at his father’s estate.

Melania and Barron’s relationship

Melania continues to be highly protective of Barron’s privacy. The first son is currently in his second year at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He relocated to the Washington, D.C., campus when his sophomore year started last fall, following his freshman year at NYU’s Manhattan campus in 2024.

He was just 10-years-old when Trump first took office in 2016, and has grown up alongside the public eye while largely avoiding media exposure.

“Melania definitely protects her son against anyone taking videos or shots of him that would put him at a disadvantage or portray him in a bad way,” a political source told PEOPLE. “She would put her foot down if necessary but nothing stressful like that has happened.

“There are guests or other family who come to the club with members during the holidays and at special occasions,” the source continued. “If something happened with one of them, they would quietly be told to stop shooting photos or videos. Not threatened.”

After rumors emerged from the holiday gatherings, online chatter suggested that Mar-a-Lago had threatened to cancel the memberships of guests who filmed Barron during the festive season. Yet, the source indicates this claim was inaccurate.

“Melania would go to the ends of the earth to protect Barron from any evil intentions from people,” a social source adds, “but nothing like this happened during the holidays.”
