Melania Trump has consistently taken a strongly protective approach regarding her son, Barron Trump, working to keep him away from unnecessary public scrutiny.
Mother’s Day is Sunday, and the first lady will likely be celebrating with President Donald Trump and her 20-year-old son Barron.
Being her only son, Melania has been vocal about her concerns regarding media attention on her Barron, who leads a largely private life. Since his father’s second term began, Barron has made only two public appearances, the latest being at February’s State of the Union address.
During the winter holiday season, Barron’s privacy was violated when the president, Melania, and their son spent time at Mar-a-Lago, the exclusive club located in Palm Beach, Florida.
On December 26, 2025, Mar-a-Lago visitors reportedly invaded Barron’s privacy by taking photos and videos of him during family time. PEOPLE reported that sources indicated an “unspoken rule” governs how Barron should be treated at such events.

One guest at the Mar-a-Lago holiday festivities noted, “It’s very understood that guests don’t bother Barron or anyone around him.”
Atlanta Black Star reported that insiders disclosed Melania was “furious” following the privacy breach involving her son at his father’s property.
Melania and Barron’s relationship
Melania remains vigilant in protecting Barron’s privacy. The first son is presently in his second year at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He transferred to the Washington, D.C., campus when his sophomore year began last fall, after spending his freshman year at NYU’s Manhattan location in 2024.
He was merely 10 years old when Trump initially assumed office in 2016, and has matured near the public spotlight while mostly staying away from media attention.
“Melania definitely protects her son against anyone taking videos or shots of him that would put him at a disadvantage or portray him in a bad way,” a political source told PEOPLE. “She would put her foot down if necessary but nothing stressful like that has happened.
“There are guests or other family who come to the club with members during the holidays and at special occasions,” the source continued. “If something happened with one of them, they would quietly be told to stop shooting photos or videos. Not threatened.”
After rumors emerged from the holiday gatherings, online chatter suggested that Mar-a-Lago had threatened to cancel the memberships of guests who filmed Barron during the festive season. Yet, the source indicates this claim was inaccurate.
“Melania would go to the ends of the earth to protect Barron from any evil intentions from people,” a social source adds, “but nothing like this happened during the holidays.”
