FRANKFURT, Germany—The European Central Bank is studying how to defend against potential cyberattacks powered by Anthropic’s AI model Mythos, even as European officials acknowledge they remain at a disadvantage because the technology has only been made available to select U.S. companies, according to Reuters.
Speaking Friday at an event in Spain, ECB President Christine Lagarde said the central bank is actively examining what protections may be needed if Mythos were accessed by “malign state actors or malign actors.” Lagarde described the AI system as a “flashy and sexy topic” that is creating an uneven playing field between the United States and Europe because access remains restricted to U.S. firms.

Developed by Anthropic, Mythos was designed to identify flaws in computer code and strengthen cyber defenses, but cybersecurity experts have warned the technology could also dramatically accelerate offensive cyber capabilities against banks and other critical infrastructure. Anthropic itself has cautioned the system could be misused and has limited deployment to a small test group of companies.
Reuters reported that ECB banking supervisors have already begun questioning eurozone banks about their preparedness for a new generation of AI-driven cyber threats, while the European Commission said earlier this week it had been briefed by Anthropic on Mythos’ capabilities and is assessing potential implications for EU regulations and policy. Lagarde added that a state-sponsored attack would be more likely given the substantial computing power required to operate such systems.
