First Lady Melania Trump is sharing more details about what her son, Barron Trump, was like as a child.
President Donald Trump‘s wife, 56, spoke about her role as mother to Barron, 20, ahead of Mother’s Day. In a written interview with USA Today published late last week, the former model revealed that her son had quite a close relationship with her late mother, Amalija Knavs.
“My mother was the epitome of love and warmth, and for Barron, a grandmother who filled every moment with joy and wisdom,” Melania said of her mom, who died on January 9, 2024, at age 78.
“Every story she read to Barron sparked his imagination, and every game they played strengthened their bond,” Melania said. “Her delicious meals were more than just food; they were a celebration of togetherness.”
The first lady said that Barron and her mother shared a “distinct bond, beginning with her gentle embrace,” adding: “When Barron was young, they often cuddled, played Barron’s favorite games, and read books together.”
“I would often hear their laughter and personally felt their joy, knowing they were creating unforgettable memories together,” Melania wrote. “Their connection was so magical. And I loved watching it.”

Melania added that Amalija made sure Barron “felt a strong connection to his Slovenian roots by sharing books and stories from our childhood.”
“By preparing traditional Slovenian dishes, my mother filled our home with delicious aromas but also connected Barron to his heritage,” Melania said, explaining that they usually spoke in “the Slovenian language.”
As the National Enquirer previously reported, it seems as though Barron is not as close to some of the other members in his family, and it appeared that his half siblings — Ivanka, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. — didn’t attend his 20th birthday party on March 20.
As for Melania, Barron’s mother also penned an op-ed for The Washington Post in celebration of Mother’s Day.
“It is time to revisit the enduring American family traditions that have supported generations, while also recognizing the challenges for mothers of building both a career and a home,” she said in the piece.
“This balancing act reflects the realities women face today,” she wrote.
