WASHINGTON (TNND) — Republicans in the Senate are advising President Donald Trump not to conduct military strikes in Cuba amid the Iran war.
GOP members of the Senate say that Trump shouldn’t be starting another military conflict in 2026 as it’s the year of midterms and many voters aren’t in favor the Iran war, according to The Hill newspaper.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said earlier this week that the main focus should be making sure the Strait of Hormuz is opened.
“I think right now we’re focused on where we are and that is trying to get the Strait of Hormuz opened up,” he said.
Following the U.S. and Israel conducting joint strikes on Iran over concerns that the country had missiles, Iran closed down the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump recently proposed a ceasefire deal, but Trump shot it down.
“It’s unbelievably weak — one of the weakest I’ve seen. It’s on life support,” Trump told reporters on Monday.
Thune said while he wants the socialist government of Cuba to fall, he wants it to happen “organically.”
“I’d love to see regime change, we all would, in Cuba,” he stated. “Maybe that happens just by force of events. I think things are happening around the world putting more pressure on a lot of these dictatorial-type governments. Maybe there’s something there that will happen organically.”
