First Lady Melania Trump was mistaken for her husband’s assistant during an awkward on-air blunder.
In June 2023, Fox News anchor John Roberts, 69, mistakenly identified President Donald Trump’s special assistant, Margo Martin, 30, as Melania, 56, live on air. At the time, President Trump, 79, pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal charges at a Miami federal courthouse. The charges stemmed from being indicted over his handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
At first, Roberts thought he spotted the president’s wife outside the courtroom. This comes after reports that the first lady was “quietly resentful” of Lara Trump for accompanying her father-in-law on the three-day visit to China.

• Donald Trump faces more ‘adult diaper’ questions due to ‘strange shape in pants’
It was actually Margo covering her eyes while wearing dark sunglasses. Roberts then mistakenly identified Martin as Melania while live on air.
“We have some video that we want to play out here, Melania Trump entering the courthouse…” Roberts told viewers. He later corrected the mistake on-air after realizing it was actually the president’s aide. Robert’s flub went viral again after Martin joined the president during his recent three-day visit to China.

After the trip to China ended on May 15, Margo shared a video montage on Instagram. In the clips, President Trump was seen meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and traveling around Beijing. She often films behind-the-scenes footage of the president on her iPhone to share on social media.
Her involvement in the Trump administration increased after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went on maternity leave. Trump previously called her “the most beautiful photographer in the world.”

This is not the first time the same network has mistaken Melania for someone else. This time around, Fox News Host Brian Kilmeade found himself in a major mix-up.
On May 13, Kilmeade mistook Lara Trump for Melania, who was part of the president’s political entourage during his China trip. Lara, 43, is married to Eric Trump, 42, the son of Donald Trump.
The incorrect statement occurred when the Fox & Friends hosts reported on Trump’s arrival at Beijing Capital International Airport as the military honor guard greeted him. Kilmeade made his blunder and said, “As the first lady comes down the stairs to greet the president, or join the president.”

Ainsley Earhardt lowered her voice, but her tone could still be heard on the mic as she corrected him, “I think that’s Lara Trump.”
Kilmeade lowered his voice as well and chimed in, “Probably interesting for her. Should have been the first lady.” Earhardt added, “I was told…” before her mic was cut off. Melania had opted out of joining her husband on the three-day visit.
