Amid a surging stock market driven by energy stocks and companies advancing generative artificial intelligence, one trillion-dollar conglomerate has remained relatively quiet. Berkshire Hathaway, referenced by name in a recent financial report, has seen its stock decline 4% year-to-date and sits more than 10% below its record high. Despite maintaining a $1 trillion market capitalization, the company has slipped to the thirteenth position among the world’s largest publicly traded firms, having been overtaken this year by Walmart and Samsung.

Leadership transition and cash position

Berkshire Hathaway is navigating a generational shift in leadership. Warren Buffett, its chairman and leader for sixty years, stepped back from day-to-day operations at the close of last year. The new chief executive, Greg Abel, has maintained a steady course over his initial five months without implementing any dramatic changes. The company has accumulated a cash reserve of $390 billion—a sum larger than the market value of only a few dozen publicly listed companies globally. Buffett has indicated a desire to use some of that cash for an acquisition, but has not found a reasonably priced target amid elevated stock valuations.

Financial performance

Berkshire operates as a diversified conglomerate with holdings in insurance, real estate, railroads, and energy, including units such as GEICO, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, and Pilot Travel Centers. In the first quarter, the company reported $93.67 billion in revenue, a 4.4% increase from the prior year. The bulk of that revenue—$81.05 billion—originated from its insurance operations, encompassing premiums and investment income. Net earnings reached $10.1 billion, up from $4.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025. Earnings per share for Class B shares, the most commonly traded, were $4.68, compared to $2.13 a year earlier.

Share repurchase signals

Management disclosed in the most recent earnings report that it repurchased $234 million of its own stock. This marked the first time since 2024 that Berkshire Hathaway bought back its shares, suggesting that the company’s leadership considers the stock undervalued.
