Donald Trump Jr. faced a sharp reminder of his father’s absence from his Bahamas wedding last week after he defended the 79-year-old’s devotion to the New York Knicks.
President Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to attend the NBA Finals in New York next month, following the Knicks’ victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, bringing them closer to their first championship since 1973.
However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul questioned the President’s claim of being a “lifelong” Knicks supporter, challenging a reporter: “I’d ask him to name the starting lineup of the 1993 championship team and see how he does.”
The comment backfired spectacularly, as the Knicks didn’t capture a title that year. Instead, their season concluded with a devastating six-game defeat to the eventual champions, the Chicago Bulls, in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Hochul may have intended to reference “1973,” when New York last won a championship, or possibly “1994”, when they advanced to the Finals but fell to the Houston Rockets. Regardless, it proved to be an embarrassing gaffe.

The Governor has since encountered significant criticism for her error, particularly from the president’s eldest son, Donald Jr., who offered a scathing response to Hochul’s mistake. “Anyone who knows my father knows he probably knows more about Sports than just about any human being not in the business,” Donald Jr. wrote on X. “Kathy’s failed soundbite ain’t gonna land well… just like her policies.”
Hochul’s press team fired back with a sharp retort: “Crazy [your dad] has time to go [to] a basketball game but not your wedding,” alluding to President Trump’s absence from the Bahamas ceremony the previous week.
The pointed jab served as a stinging reminder to the 47-year-old regarding his father’s non-attendance at his nuptials, though the bulk of respondents appeared to side with Donald Jr. over Hochul’s staff’s comeback.
“Ma’am, he’s running the country, not planning your next tax hike. Meanwhile, you can’t even name a real Knicks championship. Sit this one out, clown,” one individual sharply replied on X.
“Whatever intern wrote this is a nasty piece of work. This is grade school taunting from a Governor’s office. It’s despicable,” another person condemned, while a third commented: “You sound more upset about this than Don Jr.”
Donald Jr. wed Bettina Anderson, a 39-year-old socialite and model from an influential banking family in Palm Beach, in the Bahamas over the weekend, though the president was not anticipated to be present as the couple reportedly desired an extremely private celebration.
Despite this, the former property tycoon took to Truth Social to offer his congratulations to the newlyweds, noting that “circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America” had kept him from being present at the wedding ceremony.
