Hungary EU Funding Agreement 2026: €2 Billion for Rail Projects Under New PM Péter Magyar - News and Statistics

Hungary has secured a political agreement with the European Commission to release EU funding for investment, including rail projects. The announcement comes from newly-elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar, according to a report by Railway Gazette International published on June 2, 2026.

In recent years, the European Commission had suspended or made conditional large portions of EU funding, citing concerns that the previous administration under Viktor Orbán, who governed from 2010 to 2026, had not upheld rule-of-law and public-procurement standards.

On May 29, both sides stated that a series of reforms and governance commitments must be completed by August 31 as a requirement for unlocking the funds. Of the €16.4 billion expected to be released, Prime Minister Magyar indicated that the government anticipates roughly €2 billion will go to rail. This sum is part of a larger package of EU Cohesion funds, totaling €4.2 billion, which is divided among transport development, healthcare, social and environmental initiatives, and support for small and medium-sized businesses.

The rail allocation is intended for rolling stock procurement for HÉV Budapest suburban rail and inter-city services, along with upgrades to various main line corridors. Dávid Vitézy, appointed as Minister of Transport & Investment by Magyar, stated that the agreement marks the beginning of a new era. He said it will allow for the replacement of 50-year-old HÉV trainsets and the purchase of a new inter-city fleet, so that aging cars without air conditioning are no longer used between major cities. Vitézy added that resources may also be available to develop existing railway tracks, aiming for faster, more reliable, and higher capacity on key corridors. He characterized the period ahead as a shift from years of railway destruction to years of railway development.
