{"id":11618,"date":"2026-04-05T23:13:52","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T23:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/11618\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T23:13:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T23:13:52","slug":"von-der-leyens-plan-to-revamp-eus-e2-trillion-budget-is-unraveling-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/11618\/","title":{"rendered":"Von der Leyen\u2019s plan to revamp EU\u2019s \u20ac2 trillion budget is unraveling \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of EU governments, lawmakers and farmers is now joining forces to undo key elements of the new-look <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/740629\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">budget running from 2028 to 2034<\/a>, less than six months after the European Commission proposed to focus on those new priorities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/commission-tries-win-final-nod-to-eu-mercosur-deal-extra-budget-concessions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Von der Leyen&#8217;s offer last week<\/a> to allow countries to spend up to an extra \u20ac45 billion on farmer subsidies is her latest concession to powerful forces that want to keep the budget as close as possible to the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>Northern European countries are growing increasingly frustrated by moves by other national capitals and stakeholders to turn back the clock on the EU budget, according to three European diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>They were particularly irritated by a successful Franco-Italian push last week to exact more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/commission-tries-win-final-nod-to-eu-mercosur-deal-extra-budget-concessions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concessions for farmers<\/a> as part of diplomatic maneuvers to get the long-delayed Mercosur trade deal with Latin America over the line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some delegations showed up with speaking points that they have taken out of the drawer from 2004,\u201d said an EU diplomat who, like others quoted in this story, was granted anonymity to speak freely. <\/p>\n<p>The EU&#8217;s Common Agricultural Policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/note\/join\/2011\/460067\/IPOL-AGRI_NT(2011)460067_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was worth 46 percent of the bloc&#8217;s total budget<\/a> in 2004.
