Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government fiercely opposed Ukraine\u2019s EU accession, ostensibly over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/hungary-peter-magyar-ukraine-volodymyr-zelenskyy-upcoming-talks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minority rights for Hungarians living in Ukraine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Magyar said Kyiv had agreed to translate the negotiated measures into Ukrainian law \u201cin the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this happens,\u201d the prime minister said, Hungary would support opening the first negotiating cluster in Ukraine\u2019s EU accession talks, a key milestone in the country\u2019s membership bid.<\/p>\n<p>But Magyar appeared to hose down fast-tracking EU entry for Kyiv, pointedly saying: \u201cIf Ukraine manages to close all 33 [chapters of the EU accession negotiations] within 10 or 15 years, our country will hold a referendum on the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said: \u201cThank you to the Cyprus Presidency for its leadership in advancing Ukraine\u2019s EU accession process. My gratitude goes to all EU Member States, the European Commission, and EU institutions for their unwavering support. I also appreciate Hungary\u2019s constructive engagement.
