Speaking ahead of a planned news conference, Trump said he expected to publicly outline the details of the proposed memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said lawmakers are still seeking information about the agreement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI certainly have not yet, although we are requesting that,\u201d Thune said.<\/p>\n
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the administration\u2019s handling of the negotiations.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe needs to stop keeping America in the dark,\u201d Schumer said.<\/p>\n
According to Trump, the proposed agreement would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, would not include U.S. investments in Iran and would guarantee an open, toll-free Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to have it fully open by Friday,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
The president\u2019s comments came as average U.S. gas prices fell below $4 per gallon, though industry analysts cautioned that shipping operations through the region may take weeks to fully normalize.<\/p>\n
Questions also remain about the future of Iran\u2019s nuclear program and ongoing fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite those unresolved issues, Trump expressed confidence the agreement will move forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be back in the rear-view mirror,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The president also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the summit, signaling a renewed focus on the war in Ukraine after reports that Russia attacked a centuries-old monastery.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, back in the United States, the FBI announced that law enforcement agencies had foiled an alleged plot targeting a UFC event held on the White House lawn Sunday night. Authorities said five people were arrested and accused of planning an attack involving firearms and explosives-laden drones. Investigators say the intended targets included the crowd and President Trump.<\/p>\n
