Behind closed doors, allies are questioning whether U.S. policy may soon take a sharper turn.

U.S. President Donald Trump, during the G7 summit held on June 15–17 in France, expressed a critical attitude toward Vladimir Putin’s actions and suggested the possibility of abandoning the so-called “Anchorage agreements.”

According to Axios, citing two informed officials, after talks between Trump and Putin in Alaska in August 2025, the American side allegedly considered the option of agreeing to Russia’s demands for control over the entire Donetsk region as part of a potential peace settlement. At the same time, there has been no official confirmation from the United States of the existence of such agreements.

On June 24, Russian representatives – Yuri Ushakov, Sergey Lavrov, and Sergey Ryabkov – stated that Washington, in their view, had violated the “spirit of Anchorage.” Moscow had expected that after the talks in Alaska, the United States might support Russia’s position on the Donetsk region.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in response, denied any claims that agreements had been reached.

There were no agreements in Alaska: the parties voiced proposals but did not reach any deals; otherwise, the war would already have ended.

– Marco Rubio

One of Axios’s sources noted that during meetings within the G7 framework, Trump allowed for the possibility of increasing pressure on Russia.
