Mitch McConnell, who leads the appropriations subcommittee on defense, said he welcomed &#8220;the president\u2019s request for significant growth&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, President Donald Trump proposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/budget_fy2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">budget<\/a> for the year beginning Oct. 1, including $1.5 trillion in defense spending, a 44% increase.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposal, $350 billion of that total would have to be approved through a process known as reconciliation, which allows legislation to move forward in the Senate with a simple majority vote.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an approach to defense spending McConnell has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcconnell.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/pressreleases?ID=D4BCC052-6920-45A3-84ED-A6845872CE93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">criticized<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to this year\u2019s defense budget request, McConnell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcconnell.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/pressreleases?ID=B78055C4-806A-4970-B5AD-2F52A4D4F3FC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndoing the damage of chronic underinvestment in the national defense is a multi-year proposition, and I welcome the president\u2019s request for significant growth in annual appropriations for the U.S. armed forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But McConnell warned, \u201cBudget reconciliation, for its part, can only supplement \u2014 not replace \u2014 the consistent demand signals necessary to secure the private sector investments necessary to adequately expand and modernize our defense industrial base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s budget proposal also includes a 10% cut to non-defense programs.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u2019s Democratic counterpart on the committee, Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, criticized the proposed budget in a social media <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisCoons\/status\/2040222758718603489?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must support our service members and make sure our military has what it needs to keep us safe,\u201d Coons wrote. \u201cThis budget goes far beyond that. It reflects leadership that is in way over their heads, and it will leave already struggling Americans sicker, poorer and less secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Congress decides the budget, not the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The subcommittee will welcome \u201ccandid testimony\u201d from military and intelligence leaders in the coming weeks, McConnell said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0Sen.
