President Donald Trump said Monday the United States has studied a proposal for a 45-day ceasefire in the Iran war, a move he called a \u201cvery significant step\u201d in the conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a significant proposal, it\u2019s a significant step. It\u2019s not good enough, but it\u2019s a very significant step,\u201d Trump told reporters on the sidelines of an Easter Egg Roll event at the White House.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are negotiating now,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day the White House confirmed there was a deal under consideration for a 45-day ceasefire with Iran, but that Trump had \u201cnot signed off\u201d on the proposal and is continuing the war.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is one of many ideas, and POTUS (Trump) has not signed off on it. Operation Epic Fury continues,\u201d a White House official told AFP, adding that the president will speak more on the conflict at a press conference scheduled for 1:00 pm (1700 GMT).<\/p>\n
Around the same time, Iran state media reported that Tehran has rejected a truce to end the war that they labeled as an \u201cAmerican proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this response \u2014 set out in ten points \u2014 Iran\u2026 has rejected a ceasefire and insists on the need for a definitive end to the conflict,\u201d the news agency IRNA said.<\/p>\n
Several countries are trying to find a diplomatic solution to end 38 days of war sparked by Israeli and US attacks against Iran, which has responded by firing missiles at targets across the Middle East.<\/p>\n
At the White House event, Trump \u2014 under the gaze of First Lady Melania Trump and a mascot dressed as a giant Easter bunny \u2014 spoke about Iran\u2019s military.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat enemy is strong. Not so strong like they were about a month ago, I can tell you,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIn fact, right now they\u2019re not too strong at all in my opinion, but we\u2019re soon going to find out, aren\u2019t we?\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump also said that if it were up to him, he would seize Iran\u2019s oil, but that \u201cunfortunately, the American people would like to see us come home\u201d and end the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n
