Soccer mega-fan\u00a0Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u00a0<\/a>signed an emergency order that will block events including some concerts and food festivals from city parkland during the\u00a0FIFA World Cup.<\/a><\/p>\n

The city Parks Department adopted the rule at the request\u00a0of the NYPD<\/a>, denying new permits for special events on park property during the\u00a0<\/a>tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19.<\/p>\n

The directive could block any events with 20 or more people that require the special permits which could even include birthday celebrations at the Big Apple\u2019s 100 featured parks.<\/p>\n

However, critics contend it wouldn\u2019t be necessary if City Hall did a better job hiring officers to fill the NYPD\u2019s depleted ranks \u2014 and worked on keeping cops from fleeing the force.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still 6,000 cops short of peak staffing, with hundreds more leaving the job every month,\u201d NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice officers are already burned out by the short-staffing they experience on a daily basis,\u201d Hendry said. \u201cWhen this summer\u2019s massive workload hits, it\u2019s going to push even more of them out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

City Councilman Frank Morano (R-Staten Island) agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York used to be the city that never sleeps,\u201d said Morano, who sits on the council\u2019s parks committee. \u201cNow it\u2019s the city that cancels.\u00a0If we had the police staffing we should have, families wouldn\u2019t be paying the price for City Hall\u2019s mismanagement.\u201d<\/p>\n

NYC Parks said it adopted the rule denying or restricting \u201cspecial events\u201d at the request of the police force because manpower will be stretched patrolling events tied to the soccer tournament as well as events commemorating America\u2019s 250th anniversary.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo more effectively deploy resources and control overtime\u00a0costs, the NYPD\u00a0<\/a>has recommended that the department deny certain permit applications for new events between June 11, 2026 and July 19, 2026,\u201d the parks agency said.<\/p>\n

Applications for events not held last year could be rejected.<\/p>\n

About 1.2 million visitors are expected to converge on the New York metro region for eight World Cup games at MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. NYPCS for the New York Post<\/p>\n

But permits for demonstrations will be exempt from the rule, the agency said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe events associated with the FIFA World Cup and United States 250th anniversary will require significant realignment and deployment of NYPD personnel, which will further divert resources from regular assignments and from crime-fighting, public safety, and counter-terrorism duties,\u201d according to the rule, which was\u00a0signed by Mamdani\u00a0<\/a>and Parks Commissioner\u00a0Tricia Shimamura.<\/a><\/p>\n

Before NYC Parks<\/a>\u00a0decides on special permit applications, they will consult the NYPD to determine if resources are available to patrol the events.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is outrageous \u2014 besides making no sense,\u201d one Big Apple event planner told The Post on Monday. \u201cNormally, during the summer months, there would be over 1,000 new events where the city takes in millions of dollars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat money could\u2019ve been used for [Mamdani\u2019s] budget deficit,\u201d the planner said. \u201cMaybe he should hire an accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 1.2 million visitors are expected to converge on the New York metro region for eight World Cup games at MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Many\u00a0fans will stay at\u00a0<\/a>Big Apple hotels.<\/p>\n

Another 6 million visitors are expected for events around the 250th anniversary of the country, with which Fleet Week will coincide this year.<\/p>\n

There are already a number of related gatherings planned locally.<\/p>\n

The NYNJ World Cup 26 Fan Zone Queens will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center\u2019s Louis Armstrong Stadium from June 17\u201328. In addition to live match broadcasts, the Fan Zone will include entertainment, games, local food vendors, official merchandise, VIP hospitality experiences and more.<\/p>\n
