{"id":138367,"date":"2026-07-03T10:45:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T10:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/138367\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T10:45:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T10:45:19","slug":"us-lawmakers-urge-von-der-leyen-not-to-give-in-to-oil-and-gas-lobbyists-and-defend-eu-methane-rules-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/138367\/","title":{"rendered":"US lawmakers urge von der Leyen not to give in to oil and gas lobbyists and defend EU methane rules \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A week after 12 EU member states <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/224856\/theres-a-lot-of-panicking-about-eu-methane-rules-but-do-gas-supply-threats-add-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pressured<\/a> the European Commission into pausing the bloc\u2019s methane import rules, a group of US lawmakers have written to commission president Ursula von der Leyen urging her to hold the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>US oil and gas companies and the senior members of the Donald Trump administration have <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/224856\/theres-a-lot-of-panicking-about-eu-methane-rules-but-do-gas-supply-threats-add-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lobbied hard<\/a> to weaken the rule, and have been increasingly successful in winning EU support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the lawmakers write that \u201cmaintaining\u201d the rules for all suppliers including those in the US is \u201cessential\u201d for both EU energy security and global climate goals and urged the commission \u201cto ensure timely implementation and, above all, to preserve its ambition.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1RNn1NSwbUjy7uLs_wrIa0mf-iv4CJZ_u\/view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a>, dated 1 July and seen by EUobserver, was put together by Sean Casten, vice-chair of Congress\u2019 environmental coalition, a caucus of roughly 100 House Democrats, and co-signed by four fellow representatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson said \u201cmore congressional support is expected in the coming weeks\u201d adding that \u201cthis core group chose to send their letter early to underscore the critical stakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A defining test\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At last Friday\u2019s (26 June) energy council in Luxembourg, a Czech-led group of member states, including the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Belgium, pushed the commission to suspend the regulation\u2019s import provisions for three years, citing legal uncertainty and supply risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/224856\/theres-a-lot-of-panicking-about-eu-methane-rules-but-do-gas-supply-threats-add-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/5e6f8366-8839-44c6-a1bd-9aa17fdd97f8-987fd7a8-4fe3-4855-818b-c9cdea42e6f0-1077334a-1f53-4961-a1ec-3e.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US lawmakers pushed back on that narrative, citing recent <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/224856\/theres-a-lot-of-panicking-about-eu-methane-rules-but-do-gas-supply-threats-add-up\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> from Norwegian market analyst Rystad Energy, which found &#8220;no credible evidence&#8221; that the regulation is driving current price increases or supply pressures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That same research found EU-compliant gas supply could reach roughly three times EU demand next year, although in a later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rystadenergy.com\/news\/eu-methane-regulations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clarification<\/a> the group said it hadn&#8217;t looked at the risk that some suppliers might reroute supplies over legal uncertainty (a risk yet another analyst doubted.)<\/p>\n<p>The letter was sent following a visit to Brussels and Strasbourg as part of a congressional delegation from 15 to 17 June, where they met with European Parliament president Roberta Metsola, commission executive vice-president Teresa Ribera, climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, and MEPs working on energy, environment and trade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In those meetings, they kept hearing the &#8220;remarkably consistent message&#8221;
