Gov. Gavin Newsom will keep beating the same drum when he addresses Californians on July 4: taking shots at President Donald Trump as he tries to grow his national brand ahead of a likely bid for the White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Democratic governor, in excerpts shared with the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>, is set to make his own sort of Declaration of Independence from Trump\u2019s claims of election fraud.<\/p>\n

Trump criticized California\u2019s slow vote-counting election system as \u201ccrooked\u201d as results shifted drastically from Primary Election Day following the tabulation of late-arriving mail ballots. REUTERS<\/p>\n

\u201cThe core of our democracy, the thing that separates us from a monarchy or a dictatorship, is the fundamental right to vote,\u201d Newsom\u2019s speech reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we lose that, we lose everything. On America\u2019s 250th birthday, we need a declaration of election independence \u2014 a proclamation of freedom from the manipulators and deniers, from the threat of imprisonment for refusing to go along with Trump\u2019s schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump criticized California\u2019s slow vote-counting election system as \u201ccrooked\u201d<\/a> as results shifted drastically from Primary Election Day after late-arriving mail ballots were counted. Trump has also targeted California\u2019s mail voting<\/a> system.<\/p>\n

Newsom, in response, will unveil a plan to make it a felony for ballots to be seized. <\/p>\n

This year, Riverside County Sherriff Chad Bianco \u2014 who ran for governor as a Republican \u2014 seized ballots in his county<\/a> to investigate the 2024 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn California, we have a message for anyone considering helping Trump interfere with our election or our count,\u201d Newsom will say, per the address. \u201cIf you violate California\u2019s laws, if you interfere with our voters, tamper with our ballots or meddle in our election, you will be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speech was recorded at the governor\u2019s mansion and will be released at noon Saturday, the Chronicle reported.<\/p>\n

Newsom\u2019s office teased the speech Friday, saying, \u201cYou\u2019re gonna want to tune in tomorrow!\u201d<\/p>\n

The speech could be seen as an attempt to upstage Trump, who is also planning a speech at an \u201cepic\u201d Fourth of July bash<\/a> featuring fireworks and military flyovers in the nation\u2019s capital to celebrate America\u2019s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s office mocked Trump\u2019s plans for a lengthy speech on Friday.<\/p>\n
