{"id":13997,"date":"2026-04-07T06:03:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/13997\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T06:03:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T06:03:24","slug":"eu-leaders-welcome-lowered-temperature-with-us-for-now-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/13997\/","title":{"rendered":"EU leaders welcome lowered temperature with US \u2014 for now \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European leaders held emergency discussions in Brussels on Thursday to hash out the future of the transatlantic relationship.<\/p>\n<p>While U.S. President Donald Trump backed down from his most belligerent threats about seizing Greenland from Denmark, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-leaders-donald-trump-greenland-summit-davos-relief\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">did little to calm governments\u2019 nerves<\/a> about America\u2019s posture toward Europe.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said four main themes came up at the summit:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u00a0\u201cUnequivocal\u201d solidarity with Denmark and Greenland;<br \/>\u2014\u00a0Standing with the six member countries Trump threatened to hit with tariffs;<br \/>\u2014\u00a0\u201cFirm, but non-escalatory\u201d engagement with Washington;<br \/>\u2014\u00a0And setting out the EU\u2019s\u00a0\u201ctrade countermeasures and non-tariff instruments\u201d to respond to Trump, should he pull the trigger on tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>The punitive trade measures discussed in recent days were largely put on ice, and European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa said they want to move ahead with the EU-U.S. trade deal, signed in July.
