WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will ask the Supreme Court to rehear its decision striking down his executive order on birthright citizenship<\/a>, calling the ruling “absolutely insane.”<\/p>\n

In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed the decision was already being exploited, saying signs and billboards were appearing along the southern border and in Mexico advertising “BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP” with “Deliveries starting at $4,000.”<\/p>\n

“Likewise, similar signs going up all over our Country. Billions of Dollars will be illegally made by this SCAM, with Citizenship going to anyone willing to pay,” Trump wrote. “I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY. This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don’t change their absolutely insane decision.”<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision,<\/a> issued on the final day of its term, found that Trump’s executive order violated the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.<\/p>\n

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights\u2014to freely participate in our political community.”<\/p>\n

“The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’ We keep that promise today,” Roberts wrote.<\/p>\n

Trump has criticized birthright citizenship for years, arguing it has been abused and serves as a “magnet for illegal immigration.” He also became the first sitting president to attend oral arguments <\/a>at the Supreme Court when the case was heard.<\/p>\n

Five of the six justices in the majority concluded Trump’s order violated the 14th Amendment. Justice Brett Kavanaugh agreed the executive order was unlawful because it conflicted with federal law, though he did not conclude it violated the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The ruling prompted Republican lawmakers to renew calls for a constitutional amendment <\/a>to end birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he was disappointed by the decision and argued birthright citizenship has been “overused and abused.”<\/p>\n

“I’m sure the conclusion from this opinion is going to be that you got to have a \u2014 you got to amend the Constitution to fix that,” Johnson said. “I will say I’m very disappointed in that outcome. I think it subjects the country to serious challenges going forward, and we’ll deal with it as a Congress.”<\/p>\n

As the legal fight continues, the Trump administration has also announced a crackdown on birth tourism schemes.<\/p>\n
