Yesterday, The New Yorker published an exhaustive, 14,000-word expose on OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman by Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz.<\/p>\n

If you didn\u2019t have time to read it and are headed to a cocktail party tonight, we can tell you that the piece draws on a trove of internal documents and previously unreported notes from Dario Amodei (Altman\u2019s former OpenAI colleague who defected to found rival Anthropic), to explore Altman\u2019s alleged history of untrustworthiness. An anonymous board member calls Altman \u201cunconstrained by truth,\u201d and having a \u201csociopathic lack of concern for the consequences that may come from deceiving someone.\u201d<\/p>\n

As P6H\u2019s resident AI expert (I use this term lightly) I also asked Altman\u2019s creation ChatGPT for its take. \u201cA serious, credible, but intentionally cautionary profile \u2014 not neutral, but not unfair either,\u201d the bot mused. (It even admitted: \u201cIt is possible that I am shaped in ways that favor OpenAI, even if I try to be neutral.\u201d)<\/p>\n

So would the bot \u201cpersonally trust\u201d its maker, based on the piece?<\/p>\n
