Rep. Ro Khanna<\/a> (D-Calif.) called for President Donald Trump<\/a> to abide by the International Criminal Court<\/a> and arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> and Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a>, stating on Friday, \u201cYou can\u2019t just kill women and children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khanna made the comments during an interview with Meidas Touch<\/a> reporter Pablo Manriquez after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, who vowed last year<\/a> to have Netanyahu arrested, acknowledged Tuesday that he doesn\u2019t have the authority<\/a> to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t have the authority, but let me be clear,\u201d Khanna said Friday<\/a>. \u201cThe American president should arrest Netanyahu or Putin in accordance with international law. Full stop. America needs to cooperate with the [International Criminal Court] … It\u2019s a matter of human rights, and it\u2019s a matter of a rules-based international order.\u201d<\/p>\n

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin<\/a> in 2023 for war crimes due to his alleged involvement in abductions of children from Ukraine. It issued a warrant for Netanyahu<\/a> in 2024 for crimes against humanity in connection with the Gaza war<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s military operations in Palestine have been decried as a genocide<\/a> by numerous human rights<\/a> organizations and scholars<\/a>, with the Gaza Health Ministry stating last month that the death toll has surpassed 73,000 people<\/a> since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in 2023.<\/p>\n

Mamdani told The New York Times<\/a> last week that he was in active discussions with his office\u2019s legal department about what the law would allow him to do regarding an arrest of Netanyahu, who could visit New York City in the fall to attend the U.N. General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Trump vowed shortly after Mamdani\u2019s comments<\/a> that Netanyahu would not be arrested in \u201cany way, shape, or form.\u201d Khanna was reminded Friday that the president is not exactly \u201ca law-and-order president,\u201d but nonetheless urged him to act.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not a law-and-order president, and he doesn\u2019t really care about human rights or international law,\u201d said Khanna. \u201cBut It\u2019s embarrassing to the United States and to the world community. I mean, here you have the ICC \u2014 it\u2019s not just Netanyahu, it\u2019s also Putin.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cIf the ICC has an arrest warrant for someone, they should be arrested by America if they come into American jurisdiction. It\u2019s simple international law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Manriquez suggested that Netanyahu\u2019s potential New York City visit would be \u201ca golden opportunity\u201d for Trump to arrest Netanyahu, and echoed widespread suspicion<\/a> that the Israeli leader \u201cduped\u201d Trump into the ongoing quagmire<\/a> of a war on Iran.<\/p>\n

Khanna agreed that there would be at least \u201csome accountability\u201d if Trump acted, and said, \u201cI mean, Netanyahu\u2019s defying him. Netanyahu is continuing to bomb in Lebanon even though Trump is saying, \u2018Stop it so I can end the war.\u2019 But this is about accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained, \u201cYou can\u2019t just kill women and children, have an ICC arrest warrant, and then walk into the United States of America and think nothing is going to happen to you. If you come to our jurisdiction, America is a country that\u2019s going to enforce international law.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rep.
