{"id":169747,"date":"2026-07-28T23:23:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T23:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/169747\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T23:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T23:23:10","slug":"recent-fighting-with-iran-further-draws-down-key-us-air-defense-stockpiles-analysis-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/169747\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent fighting with Iran further draws down key US air defense stockpiles, analysis says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">WASHINGTON \u2013 Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-60d46bf8c83c43a8f2268b7b87627c55\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fighting with Iran<\/a> used up more of the U.S. military&#8217;s already diminished stockpiles of advanced missile interceptors, potentially putting American troops at more risk if hostilities resume, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/renewed-iran-war-would-test-diminished-interceptor-inventories\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new analysis<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Shrunken inventories of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-patriot-missile-system-explainer-b16125509161de8a7a3b4c38022534c7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patriot<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thaad-israel-missile-defense-iran-pentagon-34a0b06d82352df6cb0b80d94d4913c8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">THAAD interceptors<\/a> may force the U.S. and its Middle Eastern allies to take more risks to conserve those air defenses, according to the analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. For example, it said, American forces may launch fewer missiles against incoming Iranian drones and missiles, raising the chance of one getting through. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThat percentage may not go up a lot, but it goes up a little,\u201d said Mark Cancian, a retired Marine colonel and now senior adviser at CSIS who co-authored Monday&#8217;s report with research associate Chris H. Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The issue came into sharp relief when the U.S. military announced Tuesday that it had <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-us-trump-saudi-houthis-iraq-8d2ae29300a8dc5495a4ce56c5312bf1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intercepted \u201cmultiple ballistic missiles<\/a> from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The nation\u2019s advanced weapons stockpiles have become a flashpoint in the five-month-long conflict, along with the threat to the lives of American service members, heightened gasoline prices and increasing costs to taxpayers. The war has been unpopular with many Americans and is posing political problems for President Donald Trump and Republicans ahead of November&#8217;s midterm congressional elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Recent fighting adds to anxieties over weapons stockpiles <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has told Trump that the state of the country\u2019s munitions stockpile could have an impact on military operations in Iran, a U.S. official said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive conversations, said the message was delivered as part of Caine\u2019s regular duties of providing military advice and options to Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The Pentagon, however, pushed back against concerns that its capabilities have diminished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cAmerica\u2019s military is the most powerful in the world and has everything it needs to execute at the time and place of the President\u2019s choosing,\u201d Sean Parnell, the Pentagon\u2019s chief spokesman, said in a statement Tuesday. \u201cWe have executed multiple successful operations across combatant commands while ensuring the U.S. military possesses a deep arsenal of capabilities to protect our people and our interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-qatar-pakistan-d57e675a7be6dbdd34561909ced240d0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had been paused<\/a> in recent days before Tuesday&#8217;s attempted strikes, the Islamic Republic is capable of launching deadly attacks. It fired missiles and drones at a base in Jordan on July 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-us-soldier-deaths-jordan-attack-5ec21d4f12fbdee658ec15ed8d3750ee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killing three U.S. troops<\/a>. Another American soldier was killed a day later in Iraq during a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-hormuz-strait-war-july-19-2026-63996576847424ab5f22887f38037ce8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controlled detonation of an Iranian drone<\/a>, bringing the war\u2019s toll to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-casualty-count-pentagon-us-troops-4c578fc74746052627b1c87845fdc0d5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">18 U.S. service members<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers last week that the war has cost <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-hegseth-military-deaths-95-billion-7d158708c3e5385683930f8b839d0344\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an estimated $37.5 billion<\/a>. The Pentagon is asking Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/white-house-billions-congress-war-farmers-ebola-c0cbd21df91c48fa821fc21e021d8831\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for $67 billion<\/a> to replenish the military in the wake of the war, which would include funding for more high-end munitions, such as Patriots and THAADs, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Democrats in Congress often cite the use of such finite weapons as a damning metric against the war, which Trump launched without congressional approval alongside Israel on Feb. 28. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It also has raised concerns that the U.S. military would have diminished firepower in any potential future conflict with China. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-weapons-air-defense-csis-analysis-593f866ad4eae4ddbbcfdafa22267329\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CSIS warned in May<\/a> that it could take at least three years to replenish stockpiles of Patriots, THAADs and Tomahawk cruise missiles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Saving missiles reduces chances of interception <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The latest estimates from CSIS for Patriot and THAAD interceptors are based on budget documents and other publicly released information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The number of Patriot interceptors fell from 2,330 before the war to 1,030 when the April ceasefire took effect, CSIS estimated. Following the recent fighting, the stockpile is now estimated to be between 759 and 827, a decrease of at least 65% since before the conflict began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The number of THAAD interceptors fell from 452 before the war to between 232 and 262 at the start of the April ceasefire, CSIS said. The U.S. was able to replenish some of the inventory to between 234 and 278 interceptors. But the stockpile is still at least 38% smaller than it was before the conflict. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Cancian said the concern is that lower inventories could influence the U.S. military&#8217;s doctrine for shooting down incoming drones and missiles. The specifics are typically classified. But as an example, Cancian said American forces could start firing off two interceptors instead of three. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt reduces the chances of interception, but you save a missile,&#8221; Cancian said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Another possibility is that American forces hold off firing any interceptors if an Iranian missile is expected to miss its target and strike an area free of people and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThey may just let it go and accept the fact that there might be some small amount of damage,\u201d Cancian said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Associated Press writer Konstantin Toropin contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
