SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WIVT\/WBGH) \u2013 Federal SNAP cuts are impacting the Southern Tier, with Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware County on the hook for over $1.7 million in annual costs.<\/p>\n
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer released individual county data about impending costs across the Southern Tier. Sen. Schumer also called for a bipartisan federal effort to give counties a two-year delay in responding to the SNAP cuts.<\/p>\n
SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is more commonly known as food stamps. It is a federally funded program to help struggling families get food.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” passed last summer and cut almost $190 billion in federal SNAP funding. Now, individual counties, cities and towns must make up that deficit to feed its citizens.<\/p>\n
Broome County will have an over $806,000 increase cost of SNAP benefits. The Tioga, Chenango and Delaware County costs total over $894,000.<\/p>\n
“SNAP is a vital program for thousands of Broome County residents, and our priority will always be making sure eligible individuals, families, seniors, and veterans can access the assistance they need,”\u00a0Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said.<\/p>\n
According to Schumer’s Office, close to 3 million children, seniors, families and veterans in New York rely on SNAP benefits to buy groceries.<\/p>\n
