But the tactic is facing a challenge with an Iranian theocracy that believes it holds a higher threshold for strategic pain than Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While Trump has reveled in the U.S. military decimating layers of Tehran\u2019s leadership and devastating its air force and navy, Iran is betting it can outlast Trump as he faces <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-patriot-thaad-missile-defense-trump-feda2255d8adbfff797da8d3ac8e3033\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diminished stockpiles of munitions<\/a> and the difficulty of executing a war that is unpopular with the American electorate ahead of November\u2019s midterm election<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The latest episode began on Friday when Trump, surrounded by his Cabinet, grimly declared that he was \u201closing faith\u201d in negotiations with Iran and warned that the U.S. military \u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mideast-gaza-iran-israel-palestinians-strait-hormuz-9304893b474a48d18913d6f70fae4a8e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will be hitting them very hard.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Hours later, the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt heightened speculation in Washington \u2014 and around the globe \u2014 with an ominous statement asserting &#8220;Iran will continue to pay until they come to the table in, what President Trump deems, a meaningful way.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But by late Saturday night, Trump declared on social media that there were <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-strait-hormuz-israel-gaza-mideast-f4c225f6667d9fd171616304701825a0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signs of progress on reaching an agreement<\/a> and he was calling off a plan to carry out new, massive strikes for the time being. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The next day Trump emphasized that requests to give diplomacy more time from unnamed Iranian officials as well as leaders from Gulf allies \u2014 Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-strait-hormuz-israel-gaza-mideast-f4c225f6667d9fd171616304701825a0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were key to his about-face.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt would have been disastrous for them. And they didn\u2019t want us to do it,\u201d Trump said of Iran as he spoke to reporters on his way back to Washington from a weekend at his New Jersey golf club. \u201cAnd frankly, Saudi Arabia didn\u2019t want it either. ceasefire<\/a> in an announcement that came less than two hours before a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-deadline-final-strait-hormuz-1c0894ef4a2c2feaabc326cc68571c33\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deadline Trump had set<\/a> for Tehran to capitulate or face <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-power-plants-civilian-war-crimes-88b8ca1bc8e5cc8adabaf6c34e93e597\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacks<\/a> on bridges and power president was that such an endeavor would require U.S. boots on the ground in Iran \u2014 a risky proposition politically for a president who campaigned on avoiding foreign entanglements and criticized past administrations for getting bogged down in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-iran-israel-maga-republicans-truth-2d240dc778494948d1b6d15977bec6d4\" rel=\"nofollow Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research<\/a> published last week.
