Nuclear power and construction-related stocks rallied across the board as the government’s expansion of tax support for small modular reactors (SMRs) coincided with anticipation surrounding a visit to Korea by Bill Gates, founder of TerraPower. Daewoo E&C further boosted investor sentiment by reporting second-quarter earnings that exceeded market expectations.<\/p>\n

According to the Korea Exchange on the 5th, GS E&C closed at 28,750 won based on the previous day’s closing price, up 18.56% from the prior trading session. Other nuclear power and construction-related stocks also finished higher, including BHI (16.88%), Hanmi Global (16.51%), Daewoo E&C (14.29%), and Sammi Metal (12.54%).<\/p>\n

The biggest factor driving up share prices was the government’s expansion of tax support. On the 3rd of this month, the government announced its “2026 Tax Reform Plan” and decided to expand the scope of national strategic technologies from the existing hydrogen sector to future energy fields such as SMRs and micro modular reactors (MMRs). As a result, related companies will be able to receive tax credits of 30 to 50% of research and development (R&D) costs and 15 to 30% of facility investment costs.<\/p>\n

News of the visit to Korea by Bill Gates, founder of TerraPower, also stimulated investor sentiment. Bill Gates is reportedly seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Han Seong-suk, and expectations are growing that, should the meeting take place, key agenda items will include measures to respond to power demand arising from the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and semiconductor clusters, as well as ways to utilize SMRs.<\/p>\n

Among construction firms, expectations for benefits were most pronounced for GS E&C. Based on its experience building large nuclear power plants, GS E&C is pursuing participation in the SMR business and is also expanding development projects that span the planning, design, construction, and operation of data centers.<\/p>\n

Daewoo E&C added strong earnings to the mix. The company disclosed that its second-quarter operating profit this year, on a consolidated basis, was 232.3 billion won, up 182.6% from the same period last year. This far exceeded market forecasts. Jang Moon-jun, an analyst at KB Securities, said, “Second-quarter operating profit exceeded market consensus by 38.8%,” adding, “Profitability improved significantly, with the cumulative second-quarter gross profit margin (GPM) in the construction segment reaching 21.2%.”<\/p>\n
