For much of Donald Trump\u2019s presidency, JD Vance has tried to walk a narrow line on foreign policy.<\/p>\n
The vice president has cast himself as an “America first”\u00a0skeptic\u00a0of foreign wars, shaped by his service as a Marine in Iraq, while\u00a0remaining\u00a0publicly loyal to a president who prizes force, leverage and spectacle.<\/p>\n
Now, as Vance prepares to lead U.S. negotiations in Islamabad aimed at ending the war with Iran, that balancing act enters its most consequential phase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The talks in Pakistan, brokered by Islamabad after a fragile, time\u2011limited ceasefire, mark the highest\u2011level engagement between Washington and Tehran since 1979.<\/p>\n
The decision to send the vice president\u2014rather than rely solely on diplomats or envoys\u2014signals how seriously the White House views this moment.<\/p>\n
It also reflects a belief that Vance the dove, a doubter of the Iran war, can close the peace deal. <\/p>\n
From\u00a0Skeptic\u00a0to Standard-Bearer<\/p>\n
Vance\u2019s prominence would have seemed improbable only weeks ago.<\/p>\n
He was widely described as the most\u00a0skeptical\u00a0senior voice during internal debates over whether to escalate militarily against Iran, warning that a broad campaign risked regional chaos, civilian casualties, and political backlash at home.<\/p>\n
His concerns echoed the restraint\u2011first worldview, favored by MAGA, that helped propel him into national office.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But those objections stopped short of open dissent. Once Trump made the decision to strike, Vance fell into line, defending the operation and repeating the administration\u2019s central premise: Iran must not be allowed to\u00a0acquire\u00a0a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n
It was a familiar pattern: argue hard in private, then execute without fracture in public.\u00a0That posture\u2014internal\u00a0skeptic, public loyalist\u2014now defines Vance\u2019s role as lead negotiator.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Why Trump Sent Vance<\/p>\n
From Trump\u2019s perspective, placing Vance at the\u00a0center\u00a0of negotiations serves multiple aims at once.<\/p>\n
First, it signals seriousness. A vice presidential presence tells allies, adversaries, and voters that diplomacy is not a sideshow but a real attempt to shape the war\u2019s end.<\/p>\n
It also offers political protection. If talks collapse and the ceasefire unravels, Trump can argue he empowered the administration\u2019s most cautious senior voice to pursue an off\u2011ramp and that Tehran didn’t take its chance.<\/p>\n
If negotiations succeed, the White House can claim a cleaner arc: intense military pressure led to a diplomatic settlement, all under Trump\u2019s authority.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Either way, Vance holds the key to what happens next. <\/p>\n
There is a diplomatic logic to Vance, too.<\/p>\n
Iranian officials know Vance as a skeptic of the war. They may be more willing to engage meaningfully with someone they believe to be genuine in seeking an end to the conflict, and will accurately reflect their position to the president.<\/p>\n
Vance is credible to them because he combines proximity to Trump with a record of caution. He is someone Tehran can do business with.<\/p>\n
The Stakes for Vance<\/p>\n
For Vance, the implications run deeper than the negotiations themselves.<\/p>\n
His political identity rests partly on a critique of America\u2019s post\u20119\/11 interventions, wars that promised decisiveness and delivered drift at a cost of thousands of American lives, and hundreds of thousands of others.<\/p>\n
It’s an argument that still resonates with Republican voters wary of open\u2011ended conflict and fearing Iran is yet another forever war in the making.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But as vice president, Vance is inseparable from a war he neither\u00a0initiated\u00a0nor publicly resisted once it began.<\/p>\n
Leading the Islamabad talks closes whatever distance\u00a0remained. He is no longer an adviser urging restraint behind closed doors or a surrogate defending policy from afar. He is now the face of the administration\u2019s effort to end the conflict.<\/p>\n
With the outlines of a 2028 Republican primary faintly visible, Vance occupies a singular lane: less animated about the war than openly hawkish figures, yet too closely tied to Trump to posture as a dissenter.<\/p>\n
Successfully managing the transition from military escalation to diplomacy would allow him to argue to MAGA that he combined loyalty with judgment, a claim few other contenders could\u00a0plausibly make.<\/p>\n
Negotiating Without\u00a0Signaling\u00a0Retreat<\/p>\n
Strategically, Vance\u2019s appointment also sends a calculated signal.<\/p>\n
Dispatching a vice president known for\u00a0skepticism\u00a0about escalation is not an admission of weakness. It suggests confidence that military pressure has created conditions in which negotiation is now\u00a0viable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The challenge is sustaining that impression. In Islamabad, Vance must pursue de\u2011escalation without conveying that U.S. leverage has peaked.<\/p>\n
His task is much greater than hammering out technical arrangements. It is to persuade Tehran that a settlement offers greater stability than prolonged confrontation, without diluting Trump’s core demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The margins are slim. Iranian officials have warned that developments elsewhere in the region could derail talks. Trump, meanwhile, has shown little appetite for moderating his rhetoric.<\/p>\n
Vance must\u00a0operate\u00a0within a tight corridor: credible with Iran, disciplined with the president, and firm enough to preserve pressure that delivers the result everyone wants, not least him\u2014an end to this war.<\/p>\n
More Than a Diplomatic Trip<\/p>\n
Whether the Islamabad talks produce a durable settlement or merely delay renewed fighting, they\u00a0represent\u00a0a defining moment for Vance.<\/p>\n
He cannot disown a war he now\u00a0represents, nor can he shed the\u00a0skepticism\u00a0that shaped his rise. By taking responsibility for diplomacy, he is trying to reconcile those instincts in full view.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For a vice president juggling contradictions\u2014nationalist yet cautious, loyal yet uneasy with war\u2014this is a clarifying test.<\/p>\n
The talks will be judged on their results. But for Vance, the stakes are personal and lasting.\u00a0It is his\u00a0moment of truth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
