What about OpenAI? <\/p>\n

Contrast that with OpenAI. Altman has repeatedly said he holds no direct equity in the company, and he takes a modest salary to lead it — a structure originally designed to preserve OpenAI’s nonprofit ethos and avoid conflicts for board members. Investigations later revealed he had small, indirect holdings through vehicles like the OpenAI Startup Fund and a fund from venture capital firm Y Combinator, most of which he has since sold. <\/p>\n

Yet as of late 2024, he had no ongoing, material economic stake in OpenAI’s core entity. That paints a strange picture: the most powerful figure in commercial AI has more personal upside tied to a social platform than to the lab he runs. <\/p>\n

For Reddit shareholders, that alignment matters because the AI licensing business has quietly become a meaningful revenue stream for the company. In 2024, Reuters (a division of Thomson Reuters) and other outlets reported a roughly $60 million\u2011per\u2011year data deal with Alphabet. <\/p>\n

Analysis of Reddit’s filings plus Adweek’s coverage suggests that OpenAI pays on the order of $70 million annually, with AI licensing contributing about 10% of Reddit’s 2024 revenue. Multiyear contracts and remaining performance obligations disclosed in Reddit’s 10\u2011K confirm that these agreements stretch into 2026 and 2027. And talks are underway to move toward more dynamic, usage\u2011based pricing as AI models rely even more heavily on Reddit’s corpus. <\/p>\n

For investors, Altman’s Reddit windfall underscores three points: First, in the AI era, data owners can capture real economic value, not just chipmakers and model labs. Second, Altman’s lack of OpenAI equity does not mean he lacks financial exposure to the AI boom; it’s just expressed through side bets like Reddit. <\/p>\n

And third, governance and conflicts remain a live issue: OpenAI’s CEO benefits when Reddit’s data becomes more valuable to AI companies, including potentially his own, even if that value flows through a separate channel.
