French President Emmanuel Macron has found himself in hot water after he was pictured riding a jet ski on the Riviera, fuelling opposition claims that he is disconnected from ordinary people grappling with heatwaves and wildfires.<\/p>\n
The 48-year-old president drew criticism after Paris Match magazine splashed a photo of Mr Macron speeding across the Riviera on a jet ski across its cover as he vacationed at the Bregancon Fort, the presidential retreat, during France\u2019s August summer break.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast summer at the controls,\u201d Paris Match said on its cover, referring to Mr Macron\u2019s departure from the Elysee Palace next year when his second and final term ends.<\/p>\n
The magazine also featured photographs of the president engaging in water sports such as foil surfing, during a summer marked by successive heatwaves and deadly fires in France.<\/p>\n
A member of Mr Macron\u2019s entourage said that the photos were not authorised. \u201cThere have been unauthorised photos of the president every year for the past nine years,\u201d the aide said.<\/p>\n
The images drew gripes from the left-wing opposition.<\/p>\n
Greens leader Marine Tondelier said the French people were enduring an \u201capocalyptic summer\u201d while \u201cour president treats himself to a promotional feature about his vacation.\u201d She contrasted the magazine\u2019s photo with the \u201cdeaths caused by five heatwaves, a drought, and historic wildfires.\u201d <\/p>\n
Socialist leader Olivier Faure suggested Mr Macron was sending the wrong message. \u201cDuring a heatwave, while France is burning and when many French people could not afford to go on vacation, the president is having fun on a jet ski in Bregancon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Communist Senator Pierre Ouzoulias called the photos \u201cinappropriate\u201d. He said he would have preferred to see Mr Macron \u201cin a fire truck helping firefighters put out the blaze. That\u2019s where he should have been.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the summer we have experienced, showing that the president is essentially on vacation does not, in my view, match the level of concern felt by the population, which is widespread,\u201d Mr Ouzoulias said.<\/p>\n
