Take a step back and recognize that City Hall\u2019s embarrassing disconnect on the supposed NYPD detail to protect first lady Rama Duwaji on a personal trip<\/a> to Syria and Lebanon was just the latest utterly needless flub from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his team.<\/p>\n

From stunning incompetence to toxic policies, this is the result of hiring a 30-something nepo baby<\/a> to run New York City as his first real job.<\/p>\n

For an alleged master of messaging who spends hours each day filming TikTok-style videos<\/a> for his Maoist \u201cOffice of Mass Engagement,\u201d Mamdani\u2019s actual communications have been a disaster.<\/p>\n

Mistakenly announcing<\/a> that city cops would guard the mayor\u2019s wife as she visited family on her personal trip to high-risk Mideast nations was an amateur flub, when actual Mayor Bill de Blasio had to pay back the city<\/a> for bringing his NYPD detail along on his presidential campaign travel.<\/p>\n

Particularly after Mamdani had raged that Duwaji is a private person, not at all part of his official team.<\/p>\n

This followed hard on the heels of his disastrous pied-\u00e0-terre tax rollout<\/a>, which outraged not only thousands of New Yorkers who got threatening \u201cprove you\u2019re innocent (and we won\u2019t make it easy)\u201d letters but tens of thousands more who made it onto the bizarre \u201cenemies list\u201d his team posted.<\/p>\n

This, even after the blowback for his victory-lap \u201cWe\u2019re taxing the rich!\u201d<\/a> doxxing video outside the home of Citadel CEO Ken Griffin. <\/p>\n

He just can\u2019t seem to learn that his smug posturing for a distinct minority of New Yorkers can appall everyone else.<\/p>\n

Not after his July 4 I-hate-America speech<\/a> bombed, nor after his \u201cI can\u2019t arrest Bibi, but Gaza is still a genocide\u201d video plainly inspired <\/a>antisemitic violence across the city<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Not that \u201carresting Netanyahu\u201d is the only campaign promise he\u2019s had to eat: He won\u2019t close the Elizabeth Street Garden <\/a>after all; free buses <\/a>are off the table; the NYPD\u2019s Strategic Response is still doing its job<\/a>; \u201cuniversal day care\u201d will only be a pilot program for the foreseeable future and the pied-\u00e0-terre is only a ghost of the tax-the-rich hikes he promised.<\/p>\n

And the first city-owned grocery stores<\/a> at best will only open at, at outrageous expense, so close to his re-election run that they won\u2019t have time to fail.<\/p>\n

Ordering the NYPD to ease up on e-bike riders<\/a> is proving another deadly diktat whose consequences were utterly foreseeable.<\/p>\n

Yes, he is getting his rent freeze \u2014 on some apartments, at huge expense to the rest of the housing market and with a high risk it will bring<\/a> the end of rent control <\/a>completely.<\/p>\n

On top all this are embarrassments like being snubbed at a soldier\u2019s funeral<\/a> and getting booed off the stage<\/a> in Staten Island. Does his team just imagine he\u2019ll be welcomed everywhere the way he is at his canned events?<\/p>\n

The mayor has reportedly turned thin-skinned and shouty behind closed doors<\/a>, and it\u2019s easy to see why: He\u2019s in over his head, with a staff dominated by fellow tunnel-visioned lefties.<\/p>\n
