{"id":192451,"date":"2026-08-18T00:24:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T00:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/192451\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T00:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T00:24:09","slug":"looking-to-loot-meta-in-the-name-of-saving-your-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/192451\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking to loot Meta in the name of saving your kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A quartet of state attorneys general and a pack of plaintiffs attorneys haul <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/17\/tech\/mark-zuckerbergs-meta-could-face-astronomical-damages-as-historic-teen-mental-health-case-heads-to-trial\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta into federal court<\/a> in tort-hellhole Oakland on Tuesday \u2014 out to milk as many billions as they can from the tech giant in the name of protecting America\u2019s kids.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if that were their true goal they\u2019d be going after TikTok and YouTube first, since teens use both much more, before assaulting Instagram\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n<p>But Meta has the deepest pockets, a market cap of $1.5 trillion . . . which, not coincidentally, about matches <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/07\/business\/meta-says-its-facing-1-4t-in-penalties-in-teen-mental-health-case-sum-equal-to-tech-giants-valuation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the damages the litigants seek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Nor is this case actually about any real harm done to any child: It centers on Meta\u2019s supposed violations of 1950s-era state business-practices and consumer-protection laws, as the AGs claim that company leaders said the app was \u201csafe\u201d even as they pushed to make Instagram enjoyable enough that kids kept coming back.<\/p>\n<p>(The states have other gripes, but they\u2019re even more dubious.)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>Some key points:<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs bar has gobbled up hundreds of billions from \u201csafety\u201d litigation these last few decades, without making much of anything safer: The lawyers pick a \u201cbad guy\u201d and talk juries into \u201cmaking them pay,\u201d with attorneys typically consuming much or even most of the award.<\/p>\n<p>State AGs have been getting in on the act for years now, reaping personal political rewards, likewise with no gains for society \u2014 and they\u2019ve even taken to contracting out the lawsuits to the tort bar, giving the plaintiffs attorneys government power to work their plundering games.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits like this would transform the US legal treatment of tech into something much like that of the European Union \u2014 laws that blocked the tech revolution there, so that the EU has seen almost zero economic growth this century.<\/p>\n<p>Bankrupting Meta (or just bleeding it a lot) won\u2019t fix a thing.<\/p>\n<p>If society wants to do something about children\u2019s use of tech, it needs to pass laws that address the issue: Maybe start by mandating age-verification safeguards, parental controls etc. be factory-installed on the smartphones the kids use \u2014 phones an adult is almost always paying for.<\/p>\n<p>The Oakland case, like hundreds of suits about teens and social media across the nation, isn\u2019t about fixing anything;
