{"id":192633,"date":"2026-08-18T03:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T03:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/192633\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T03:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T03:55:09","slug":"the-nation-may-be-next-lefty-outlet-to-fire-mamdani-loving-ross-barkan-after-ny-mag-catches-plagiarism-67-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/people\/192633\/","title":{"rendered":"The Nation may be next lefty outlet to fire Mamdani-loving Ross Barkan after NY Mag catches plagiarism 67 times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nation is reviewing work by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/14\/media\/new-york-mag-fires-mamdani-loving-writer-ross-barkan-for-67-instances-of-ripping-off-other-authors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lefty columnist Ross Barkan after he was axed by New York Magazine on Friday<\/a> for ripping off other authors\u2019 work dozens of times.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement that notably lacked contrition, the Mayor Mamdani-loving author previously downplayed the plagiarism and boasted he was starting \u201ca new column for The Nation,\u201d adding that he would take \u201ca more considered pace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a Nation rep told The Post on Monday there are no plans for him to start a column \u2014 and the mag is reviewing stories he\u2019s written for the publication since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Ross Barkan was fired by New York Magazine on Friday following a probe into his work. Youtube\/The Honest Broker<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are conducting an internal review in the wake of\u00a0New York\u2019s\u00a0announcement,\u201d the spokesperson said, clarifying that Barkan \u201cis not under contract to write a column for\u00a0The Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The writer did not return The Post\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times, where Barkan scored a number of bylines, told The Post it reviewed Mamdani\u2019s work but didn\u2019t find anything shady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss Barkan has no contributor affiliation to either The New York Times Magazine or Times Opinion,\u201d a Times spokesperson said. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t written for Opinion since July 2025 or for the magazine since January 2025. Times editors have looked at Barkan\u2019s past work for us and found nothing that violates our standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post also reached out to The Atlantic and The Guardian to ask if they are reviewing his work, too.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Magazine probe was sparked when a Washington Post reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/drewharwell\/status\/2054927246788304931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">noticed strong similarities<\/a>\u00a0between the lead of one of his articles and the lead Barkan wrote about the same subject in May.<\/p>\n<p>As NPR\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/05\/17\/nx-s1-5824503\/new-york-magazine-review-ross-barkan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">unearthed additional plagiarism allegations<\/a> \u2014 drawing an angry denial from Barkan \u2014 New York mag launched its review.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the four-month process, New York said it was parting ways with Barkan.<\/p>\n<p>The Nation is reviewing Barkan\u2019s articles after New York\u2019s announcement. The Nation<\/p>\n<p>New York said it found 67 of his columns \u201cthat did not include proper attribution of language, information and\/or sourcing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The publication said it was updating those pieces with proper attribution and is \u201ccommitted to addressing any other instances that come to light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon conclusion of the review, we have determined that we will no longer publish his column,\u201d NY Mag added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regret that his work did not live up to our editorial standards, and apologize to the writers whose work was not appropriately attributed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prolific Barkan appeared to blame the plagiarism on working at a frantic pace.<\/p>\n<p>New York said Barkan\u2019s work did not meet its editorial standards.  New York<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the course of nearly 250 pieces, there were times I should have been more careful with my citation,\u201d he said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry about these errors and will work to do better, more careful work in the future,\u201d he added. \u201cI am, at a more considered pace, writing a new column for The Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barkan is widely viewed as one of Mamdani\u2019s biggest boosters in city journalism, regularly praising the democratic socialist on his Substack and other outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Barkan previously called Mamdani\u2019s 2025 mayoral victory \u201cseismic.\u201d Luiz C. Ribeiro for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>The writer regularly bashed former Gov.
