Now that relationship is beginning to affect the military architecture that has underpinned security in Northeast Asia for decades.<\/p>\n<p>As The Japan Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2026\/08\/17\/asia-pacific\/politics\/us-south-korea-military-exercises-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> this week, Trump said he was scaling back what he called \u201ccostly\u201d and \u201cinappropriate\u201d joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises, prompting speculation that he hopes to reopen direct talks with Kim. Citing his \u201cvery good relationship\u201d with the North Korean strongman, Trump said he was \u201cnot happy\u201d that Washington had agreed to participate in the exercises, which he described as sending an \u201cinappropriate and hostile\u201d signal to Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<p>For Japan, those words carry consequences well beyond the Korean Peninsula. Regular U.S.-South Korean exercises are not simply displays of military power. They are an important measure of readiness and a visible demonstration of Washington\u2019s commitment to its Asian allies.
