U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is pitching a plan to help shield local police officers who make immigration arrests<\/a> from possible financial consequences if they are accused of on-duty misconduct.<\/p>\n

The agency is proposing to subsidize liability insurance for state and local officers who are trained and deputized to enforce federal immigration laws, according to a planning document<\/a> published Friday.<\/p>\n

ICE\u2019s partnerships with local departments have soared since Trump returned to the White House last year and may get an additional boost with liability insurance by removing a hurdle that has made some local police departments reluctant to join. The Associated Press is the first to report on this insurance proposal.<\/p>\n

Under the plan, officers would purchase insurance covering up to $500,000 in personal liability, which typically funds legal fees, settlements and judgments. Officers would be reimbursed up to $250 annually \u2014 roughly what the insurance is expected to cost.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made personal mistakes outside my marriage. Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven\u2019t violated the law or House Ethics rules, that doesn\u2019t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most,\u201d Gomez said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take full responsibility,\u201d he said. \u201cI have and continue to sincerely apologize to my family, friends, and the people that I have the privilege to serve. I am deeply sorry to my wife for the pain and embarrassment that I have brought into our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gomez noted that he respects the committee\u2019s process and is ready to cooperate with the inquiry.<\/p>\n

Activists welcome Big Bend construction pause but say it\u2019s only a first step<\/p>\n

Activists rallying support against the Trump administration\u2019s border construction plans in Texas welcomed news that the administration is pausing construction in Big Bend National Park but say the real question is what comes next.<\/p>\n

Bob Krumenaker was the former superintendent of the Big Bend National Park from 2018 to 2023 and now chairs the organization \u201cKeep Big Bend Wild.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows that they are paying attention to all of the objections that have been raised across the political spectrum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But Krumenaker said it\u2019s unlikely that Customs and Border Protection will entirely abandon its plans. He wants to see equipment like the bulldozers removed from the park and damage repaired and he\u2019ll be looking to see how transparent the agency is in outlining a plan going forward.<\/p>\n

Laiken Jordahl with the Center for Biological Diversity said in a statement that the it was \u201cwelcome news\u201d but warned that construction could resume \u201cat any moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator to file War Powers Resolution to halt Trump\u2019s threats against Oman<\/p>\n

Sen. Tim Kaine said Trump \u201cis increasingly deranged in his one-man campaign to threaten and initiate wars all over the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Virginia Democrat said Trump\u2019s threats against Oman, a country the U.S. has diplomatic and trade relationships with, makes adversaries like China and Russia \u201crub their hands with glee.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senator said he would file a War Powers Resolution to prohibit military action against Oman as soon as lawmakers return to Washington from summer recess.<\/p>\n

House Ethics committee investigating lawmaker for potential sexual misconduct<\/p>\n

The House Ethics Committee says it is reviewing allegations that Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California may have engaged in sexual misconduct in violation of the code of official conduct.<\/p>\n

In a release Monday, the committee said it is reviewing the allegations including inappropriate sexual contact with a House staff member.<\/p>\n

It noted that the fact that it is investigating the allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred.<\/p>\n

The congressman\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

It comes as the House is pursuing claims of misconduct and lawmakers have stepped aside this year during investigations of improper behavior.<\/p>\n

The project through the national park in southern Texas has faced fierce bipartisan opposition by critics who say it is marring a pristine environmental area and that the region\u2019s rugged and remote terrain already serves as a deterrent to migrants and smugglers.<\/p>\n

Rodney Scott, who heads Customs and Border Protection which is tasked with building the wall, said in an announcement on X that he was visiting Texas to do an evaluation.<\/p>\n
