House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says he isn\u2019t backing the Democratic Socialists of America\u2019s goals, but he is declaring war on the Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Does he think DSAers will be satisfied with that \u2014 and sane Americans won\u2019t be alarmed?<\/p>\n

Jeffries stressed Sunday that he doesn\u2019t \u201csupport the DSA agenda<\/a>, as has been articulated by the DSA itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet he also warns that Democrats will \u201cpush for dramatic reform of the Supreme Court,\u201d because its \u201cconservative, right-wing majority\u201d\u00a0is \u201ca subsidiary of the MAGA Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Huh? The Supremes have sometimes come down on the administration\u2019s side, but they\u2019ve also slapped down President Donald Trump repeatedly \u2014 on his bid to upend birthright citizenship, the E. Jean Carroll lawsuit, his beloved tariffs and a whole lot more.<\/p>\n

So while it\u2019s nice that the House Democrats\u2019 leader isn\u2019t embracing the DSA\u2019s most outrageous plans \u2014 like scrapping the court altogether, along with the Senate and even the presidency \u2014 waging war on the high court is still outrageous.<\/p>\n

Worse, Jeffries is putting rabid-left Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) in charge of his anti-SCOTUS agenda, a clear sign that he won\u2019t hesitate to keep delegitimizing the court simply because it declines to impose the progressive agenda.<\/p>\n

He declared \u201ca variety\u201d of reforms to be \u201con the table,\u201d from blatantly unconstitutional efforts to impose term limits or Congress\u2019 idea of ethics rules on the justices, to simply packing the court with lefties so conservatives can never prevail.<\/p>\n

Yet Jeffries is playing a fool\u2019s game: Socialists won\u2019t be satisfied with a mere call for court-packing, while centrists will see it for what it is \u2014 a bid to turn a bastion of our 250-year-old democratic republic into an enforcer of left-wing ideology.<\/p>\n

Protecting \u201cdemocracy\u201d by destroying a bulwark of democratic self-government and the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Yes, Jeffries is desperate to fend off the left\u2019s bid to oust him from leadership: DSAers already chant, \u201cYou\u2019re next,\u201d whenever they see him, and of course lots of Democrats are furious over recent high-court rulings.<\/p>\n

Yet promoting feeding the radicals\u2019 attack on our very form of government can only empower them in the long run. <\/p>\n

If Democratic leaders<\/a> want to stop the far left\u2019s takeover of their party, they\u2019re going to have to reject its agenda and offer a sane alternative that genuinely appeals to the broader public.<\/p>\n
