AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Vernikov<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/20\/ukrainian-born-nyc-gop-lawmaker-meets-with-donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> personally met with <\/a>Trump in 2022 and his son, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/29\/donald-trump-jr-does-robocall-for-nyc-candidate-inna-vernikov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump Jr. <\/a>recorded a robocall urging Brooklyn voters to back her first election in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe war is still ongoing, Russia continues to attack Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, and civilians remain at risk. Ukraine has not returned to normal conditions in which it would be reasonable to expect people currently protected in the United States to return safely,\u201d Vernikov told the president in a letter.<\/p>\n<p>The TPS designation was last extended to Ukrainian nationals in January 2025 and conditions in the war that first started in 2022 have not changed, the councilwoman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkrainians who have built lives in the United States have also become productive members of our communities,\u201d Vernikov said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are working, paying taxes, raising families, supporting local businesses, and contributing to our economy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey should not be forced to choose between returning to an active war zone and abruptly losing the legal protections that allow them to remain and work here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian experts work with the bodies of victims at the site of a Russian missile strike in the village of Pechenihy, Kharkiv region, Ukraine, on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026.  SERGEY KOZLOV\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The councilwoman called Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/01\/ukraine-born-gop-pol-inna-vernikov-says-putin-is-a-terrorist-who-wants-to-destroy-democracy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Vladimir Putin<\/a> a \u201cterrorist\u201d who \u201clost his mind\u201d and who wants to \u201cdestroy democracy\u201d just days after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>She said Tuesday that extending TPS does not require making a \u201cpermanent commitment\u201d to any Ukrainian\u2019s legal immigration status, calling it a \u201ctemporary, humanitarian measure that recognizes the reality on the ground while the war continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI therefore respectfully request that the Department of Homeland Security be directed to extend Ukraine\u2019s TPS designation for an additional 18 months, or for as long as the statutory conditions for TPS continue to be met,\u201d Vernikov said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkrainians who have built lives in the United States have also become productive members of our communities,\u201d Vernikov said.
