Twelve students meet weekly<\/a> in a campus residence. No course code. No registrar record. No official Stanford sanction. The seminar is called “Rule” \u2014 shorthand for “So You Think You Can Rule the World?” \u2014 and it’s run by Stanford alum and investor Justin Lewis-Weber. He selects six men and six women per cohort through referrals and interviews, filtering for ambition and “projected impact.” Phoebe Gates<\/a>, Bill Gates’ youngest daughter and Stanford human biology graduate (class of 2024), is named as a former participant by The Stanford Daily<\/a>. The “controlling society” headlines circulating on social media are overwrought. The reality is still worth examining.<\/p>\n

Students reportedly work through writings by Peter Thiel<\/a> and Paul Graham alongside effective altruism frameworks, debating multipolar traps, prisoner’s dilemmas, and commons problems. One former student described the goal to The Stanford Daily<\/a> as teaching people “how to essentially hack any kind of power structure or bureaucratic structure and get what they want in a system of people.” That framing isn’t inherently sinister \u2014 until you notice that ethics<\/a> is, by critical accounts, only partially and controversially integrated<\/a> into the curriculum rather than central to it.<\/p>\n

Stanford’s official curriculum does study power. The Deliberative Democracy Lab<\/a> runs courses on AI and collective decision-making, explicitly designed to strengthen institutions. Rule’s distinction isn’t that it examines power structures \u2014 every political science department does that. Its distinction is that it operates deliberately off-the-books, that students are reportedly discouraged from disclosing their involvement, and that entry requires knowing exactly the right people first. That’s not a class. That’s a network with homework.<\/p>\n

From Campus to Courtroom<\/p>\n

The distance between “hack power structures” and “exploit affiliate attribution” turns out to be uncomfortably short.<\/p>\n

Gates reportedly used the Rule network to recruit for Phia, her AI-powered shopping assistant startup. Phia now faces allegations of cookie stuffing<\/a> \u2014 placing tracking cookies<\/a> to claim affiliate commissions on purchases users made entirely independently of the platform. Attorneys quoted in coverage warn of potential wire-fraud<\/a> exposure<\/a> carrying maximum penalties of up to 20 years. No direct evidence links Rule’s curriculum to Phia’s alleged practices. But the adjacency is uncomfortable enough to say out loud.<\/p>\n

This story isn’t really about one billionaire’s<\/a> daughter gaming a system. It’s about who gets trained to shape the systems you use every day \u2014 and whether “elite leadership education” and “strategic manipulation” are as different as their proponents insist. If you’re running an AI shopping<\/a> extension right now, you’re already inside someone’s incentive structure. The question worth asking is whether the people who built it learned their approach in a room you’ll never be invited to enter.<\/p>\n
