President Donald Trump<\/a> filed a motion on Friday to bar the BBC<\/a> from subpoenaing his family members as part of the U.K. media company\u2019s legal defense against Trump\u2019s defamation lawsuit.<\/p>\n

In response to a motion from the BBC that asked the Florida<\/a> federal court to allow subpoenas of Donald Trump Jr.<\/a>, Ivanka Trump<\/a>, and Jared Kushner<\/a>, the president\u2019s legal team called the media company\u2019s move \u201cthe latest, cynical move in the BBC\u2019s sweeping, politically-charged
discovery campaign.\u201d Trump\u2019s legal team asked the court on Friday to toss BBC\u2019s motion as the case proceeds.<\/p>\n

BBC initially filed the motion on Aug. 14, arguing lawyers for the media company have not been able to serve subpoenas on the three Trump family members as they are protected by U.S. Secret Service<\/a> agents. BBC has argued the family members \u201chave personal knowledge and likely have possession, custody, or control of records relevant to multiple elements of Plaintiff\u2019s claims against the BBC.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BBC has endeavored to resolve this issue without seeking the Court\u2019s assistance,\u201d BBC\u2019s lawyers wrote in the August court filing, saying they also attempted, without success, to ask the Secret Service agents to accept the subpoenas on behalf of the family members.<\/p>\n

Trump initially filed the lawsuit against the BBC<\/a> in December 2025, alleging the media company edited the Jan. 6, 2021 speech at the Ellipse in a \u201cfalse, defamatory, deceptive, disparaging, inflammatory, and malicious\u201d way as part of a documentary<\/a> that aired a week before the 2024 presidential election. Trump claimed $10 billion in damages from the edits in the case.<\/p>\n

BBC initially sought access to Trump\u2019s personal financial records to support its defense, which could have made those records public in court documents. But this effort was blocked when Trump filed an appeal to stay discovery proceedings, and Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Roy Altmana allowed the president to file an amended complaint<\/a> to shift his reasoning from personal financial damages to reputational damages.<\/p>\n

In their Friday filing, Trump\u2019s lawyers argue BBC\u2019s \u201cpolitically-charged discovery campaign \u2026 has already been rejected by this Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe BBC seeks a sweeping order authorizing service of document and deposition subpoenas on three members of President Trump\u2019s immediate family. Yet, the BBC has not placed any of those subpoenas before the Court,\u201d Trump\u2019s lawyers wrote in the filing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Southern District of Florida case was transferred to District Judge Jeffrey T.
